Overview - Bhitarkanika Bird Sanctuary

Located on the coast of Orissa, Bhitarkanika Wildlife Sanctuary is a Ramsar site of 672 sq km that lies on the delta of the Brahmani and Baitarani rivers. The river systems and the mangrove forest of the sanctuary are ideal habitats for the colossal saltwater crocodiles seen here which are the largest amongst all species. The area was declared a wildlife sanctuary in their protection. Bhitarkanika also hosts an extraordinary heronry as the area attracts many waterfowl species that gather here to breed. The park is also famous for the variety of Kingfishers seen here like the Brown Winged Kingfisher, Collard Kingfisher, Common Kingfisher, the White Throated Kingfisher, Pied Kingfisher, the Black Capped Kingfisher, the Stork Billed and the Ruddy Kingfisher. Apart from Sunderban National Park, it’s also the another place in India where one can spot the elusive Mangrove Whistler.

Best Time to Visit Bhitarkanika Bird Sanctuary

November – February is an ideal time as this when migratory birds throng to the place. The weather during this time is pleasant, averaging in the range of 16 to 29 degrees Celsius.
The park is closed from May–July, and in the second week of January (for crocodile census).

Boat Safaris : Bhitarkanika is bets navigable via motorboat. In fact, it is the only way to get around the estuarine mangrove belt. One can get great shots of the wildlife here, at times they can be clicked at eye level depending on the rise and fall of the seal levels.

By Air : Nearest airport: Bhubaneswar (130km/ 4hrs to Rajnagar; 185km/ 4hrs to Chandbali), the flights are connected from all metros and many cities such as Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai.

By Train : Nearest railheads: Cuttack (100km/ 3hrs to Rajnagar), connected to Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, Delhi, Chennai and more. Bhadrak (55km/ 3hrs to Chandbali).

By Road : From Bhubaneswar, one should take NH5 to the town of Chandikhol, then go via Kendrapara and Pattamundai to Rajnaga.
