Overview - Banni Grasslands Reserve

Banni Grasslands or the Banni Grassland reserve are tucked into the salty flats of the Kutch District in Gujarat. Rich in biodiversity and wildlife, the land here was formed from the sediments deposited by the Indus over a thousand years ago. With every monsoon peering in the Grasslands, Banni witnesses increasing number of marsh wetlands. These wetlands are located on the flyway of Palearctic migratory birds and play a very important role as foraging, roosting, and staging grounds for millions of waders, waterfowl, cranes and other feathered migrants that visit the area from August and staying until March every year. Thousands of flamingos in their breeding plumage, common cranes and other wetland birds including hundreds of painted storks (Mycteria leucocephala) and Eurasian Spoonbills (Platalea leucorodia) among others can be spotted in the larger of these seasonal wetlands of the Banni.

The temperatures in Banni vary between 12 to 25 degree Celsius. Therefore, the best months to plan an excursion to this beautiful wetland will be October to February.

Walking Safaris : Since Banni is a wetland, most of the exploring is done on foot. You can drive up to the wetland, post which you will have to walk around it. One can also attempt climbing up the watch tower if you’re feeling adventurous.

How to reach Banni Grasslands Reserve

By Air : The nearest airport to the wetland is the Bhuj Airport. Bhuj is well connected to major cities in the country like New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, etc. It is at a distance of 80 kms from the Rann Desert. Rann is a 40 kms drive from the wetland.

By Train : To get to Banni, one will first have to reach Rann of Kutch. The nearest railhead to Rann of Kutch is Bhuj, at a distance of 103 kms. Post the train journey, one can drive from Kutch to Banni (40 kms). Trains from major cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Pune run on this route.

By Road : One can drive to Banni directly or even take inter city busses to Kutch and then hire a can to get to Banni. Busses on this route operate from all major cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Pune, Surat, Jaipur etc.
